Hiking in the Zugerberg

For Kim’s birthday we decided to take a leisurely hike in the Zugerberg. Thankfully, we had already purchased our half-price transportation cards and Aaron had his 3-zone transportation card, so we all rode from the apartment and up the Zugerberg for free. That’s one of the perks of a great public transit system; it’s very, very easy to move around – and up!

We enjoyed over 2 hours of hiking through parks, forest, fields, past farms and cows, down and up hill alongside streams. Kim really enjoyed all the wildflowers and we all had a great time in the fresh air. I suppose you could say we hiked “until the cows came home” (see some of the video shot on the way back).

    Photos are breathtaking.
Just curious where all the cow bell noise or is it wind chimes is coming from in the background on the video. Rachael said “Awww, I could have fun there!”

All of the cows we saw were wearing bells around their necks. I think this helps farmers keep track of them in the fields and hills. As we watched the cows come home, we also noted that the farmer used a higher pitch bell – one that sounded very different from the cows’ – to call them home and guide them into the barn.

I believe cow bells are also used by the Swiss during football (soccer) games 🙂
