Istanbul, Turkey Day 1

Today we flew from Zürich to the Atatürk airport in Istanbul, Turkey. As you’ll see in a few of the photos below, the view was spectacular.

We arrived to a sunny, chilly day. After purchasing our visas, we went through customs, then met our driver. We had a bit of difficulty finding him, but after a free phone call to the hotel from the post office at the airport, we connected with him.

Thanks goodness none of us had to do the driving. The roads are a bit hairy. After bumping down a few cobblestone streets we arrived at the front entrance of the Hotel Sari Konak where we were met by a friendly man at the front desk.

Our room is quite nice, and it’s a short walk up to the roof where we have a great view of the city, with the Blue Mosque on one side and the Hagia Sophia on the other. The Sea of Marmara stretches away from the hotel, loaded with many barges and other vessels.

We had a nice meal tonight, purchased bottled water at a mini mart, then we investigated some site-seeing options for tomorrow. We booked a cruise on the Bosphorus for tomorrow.
